Energy Storage Expands into Ports, Ships and Data Centres
The global battery industry is expanding beyond electric passenger vehicles into large-scale infrastructure, shipping, power grids and data centres.
Financial Times reporting published on 31 July 2026 described how major battery producers are developing energy-storage systems for a wider range of industrial applications.
The transition reflects growing demand for reliable power management in industries where interruptions can cause substantial financial losses.
Ports are becoming major energy consumers
Modern ports require electricity for cranes, cargo-handling equipment, refrigerated containers, warehouses, pumps, communications systems, terminal lighting, shore-power connections and electric vehicle fleets.
Battery systems can help port operators manage peak electricity demand and provide backup power when grid supply is interrupted.
Energy storage may also be combined with solar generation, wind power and conventional generators to create a hybrid terminal power system.
Marine applications are increasing
Battery technology is becoming more relevant to commercial shipping.
Potential applications include:
- fully electric harbour vessels;
- hybrid propulsion systems;
- auxiliary power;
- peak-load management;
- hotel-load supply;
- reduced engine idling;
- backup electricity for navigation and communications.
Large ocean-going vessels are unlikely to become fully battery-powered in the immediate future because of their high energy requirements. However, battery-assisted propulsion and hybrid systems may reduce fuel consumption and emissions in selected operating conditions.
Short-sea shipping, ferries, port service vessels and inland-waterway transport are particularly suitable for early adoption.
Data centres require stable power
The rapid construction of artificial-intelligence infrastructure is creating additional demand for electricity and backup capacity.
Data centres require uninterrupted power for servers, cooling systems and network equipment. Even a brief interruption can affect critical digital services.
Battery storage can provide short-term backup power, grid balancing, peak-demand reduction, integration with renewable generation and protection against voltage instability.
Relevance to marine and port operations
The expansion of shore power, terminal electrification and hybrid propulsion will not immediately eliminate conventional marine fuels. Instead, ports and ship operators are likely to use mixed energy systems combining batteries with liquid fuels and grid electricity.
This creates a transition period in which operational reliability, fuel availability and power-management infrastructure remain equally important.
Outlook
Energy storage is evolving from a specialised electric-vehicle component into a major part of global industrial infrastructure.
Ports, shipping companies, energy utilities and data-centre operators are likely to become increasingly important customers for battery manufacturers during the next phase of market development.
