What is reformate?

Reformate is a refinery stream produced in catalytic reforming units and used primarily as a high-octane blending component in gasoline manufacturing. It typically contains elevated aromatic content and provides strong octane contribution to finished fuel pools.

In commercial supply terms, reformate buying decisions are usually driven by octane uplift value, blending economics, sulfur target alignment and document quality. This is why each cargo should be treated as a structured specification transaction rather than a generic fuel purchase.

High-octane reformate for gasoline blending

Aromatics, benzene & sulfur considerations

Reformate is aromatic-rich by nature, which is the source of both its octane value and its principal specification constraints. Many finished gasoline standards limit total aromatics and benzene content, so the share of reformate in a blend is usually bounded by those limits rather than by octane demand alone.

Where the destination market applies a benzene ceiling, buyers should state the required limit before fixture so that the cargo assay can be matched to the target blend recipe.

Sulfur, vapour pressure, density and distillation must likewise be verified through the applicable cargo assay and CoA rather than assumed from a generic product description.

Reformate vs alkylate

Reformate and alkylate are both high-value gasoline blending components, but they contribute differently to a gasoline pool.

Reformate is an aromatic-rich stream produced through catalytic reforming, while alkylate is a predominantly paraffinic component produced by alkylation of light olefins with isobutane. Both raise octane, but they differ in aromatics, benzene, vapour pressure and sensitivity to finished-fuel composition limits.

They should not be treated as one-to-one substitutes. The appropriate component or blend ratio must be determined from the required finished-fuel specification and the assay of the available streams.

Reformate vs naphtha

Naphtha and reformate sit on opposite sides of the same refinery process. Heavy naphtha is the feedstock charged to a catalytic reforming unit; reformate is the high-octane product that leaves it.

Commercially this means naphtha is bought as reformer or steam cracker feed, while reformate is bought as an octane blending component or as an aromatics-rich stream. A buyer with reforming capacity will normally evaluate heavy naphtha; a buyer blending finished gasoline will normally evaluate reformate.

Reformate vs finished gasoline

Reformate is not normally sold as a finished road-fuel grade such as RON 92, RON 95 or RON 98 gasoline.

It is one of the components that may be blended with other hydrocarbon streams and, where applicable, oxygenates to produce finished motor gasoline meeting a specified octane and quality standard.

FOB Black Sea is suitable for buyers handling their own freight strategy and vessel nomination. Final port, parcel size, laycan and operational requirements are confirmed for each transaction.

CIF reformate

CIF destination port is preferred when buyers need a consolidated landed-delivery model including freight and insurance. Final pricing reflects cargo assay, quantity, loading point, freight, insurance, destination and shipment window.

Reformate cargo size & logistics

Reformate is supplied as a bulk liquid cargo.

Enquiries from 5,000 MT may be evaluated where the applicable allocation and logistics program supports the requested parcel.

Final parcel size, loading window, vessel requirements and operational conditions are confirmed for the individual transaction.

Quality control & independent inspection

Final reformate quality is confirmed against the contractual specification and cargo-specific CoA or assay.

Independent inspection may be performed by SGS, Bureau Veritas, CCIC or another agreed independent inspection company at the contractual milestone defined in the SPA.

Historical or unrelated inspection reports are not presented as proof of a current contractual reformate cargo.
