What is gasoil — definition and characteristics

Gasoil is a middle distillate petroleum product obtained from the atmospheric distillation of crude oil, boiling in the range of approximately 180–360 °C. The term "gasoil" historically derives from its original use in producing town gas, but today it covers a broad family of distillate fuels used across industry, heating, marine and agricultural sectors.

Gasoil occupies the same boiling range as automotive diesel but is typically produced and marketed with wider sulfur tolerances and fewer additive requirements. It may not meet on-road fuel specifications (such as EN 590 for automotive diesel), but it fulfils the performance needs of boilers, generators, off-road machinery, marine engines and heating systems efficiently and economically.

In international trade, gasoil is one of the highest-volume refined products exported from Russia. It is loaded at Black Sea, Baltic and Far Eastern terminals, serving buyers across the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Europe and the Mediterranean.

Sulfur grades — selecting the right gasoil

We supply gasoil in three sulfur tiers to match diverse regulatory and operational requirements:

GradeMax sulfurPrimary use
Gasoil 0.1% (1 000 ppm)0.1 % massMarine gasoil (MGO) for ECA zones, low-emission heating, some off-road standards
Gasoil 0.5% (5 000 ppm)0.5 % massGeneral industrial fuel, heating oil, power generation, IMO 2020 marine compliance
Gasoil 1.0% (10 000 ppm)1.0 % massHeavy industrial process heat, boiler fuel, regions without strict sulfur limits

The 0.1% grade (marine gasoil / MGO) is required for vessels operating in emission control areas (ECA) under IMO regulations. The 0.5% grade is widely traded for general industrial and heating use and also meets the IMO 2020 global sulfur cap. The 1.0% grade serves buyers in regions where higher sulfur is acceptable for industrial and power applications.

Technical specifications — typical export quality

ParameterTypical value / limit
Density at 15 °C830–870 kg/m³
Viscosity at 40 °C2.0–6.0 cSt
Flash point62 °C min
Cetane index≥ 46
Pour point-6 to -15 °C (depends on season/grade)
Sulfur content0.1 / 0.5 / 1.0 % mass (per grade)
Water content≤ 200 mg/kg
Ash content≤ 0.01 % mass
Color2.0 max (ASTM D1500)

Exact parameters depend on the refinery source and crude slate. Each cargo is accompanied by a Certificate of Analysis (CoA) confirming all specified quality parameters.

Applications — where gasoil is used

Heating Residential, commercial and district heating systems
Power generation Diesel generators, distributed and emergency power
Marine (MGO) Ship engines, boilers, ECA compliance
Industry Process heat, furnaces, dryers, kilns
Agriculture Tractors, harvesters, irrigation pumps
Construction Excavators, loaders, off-road equipment

Gasoil's combination of high energy density, ease of storage and competitive pricing makes it the workhorse fuel for sectors that do not require automotive-grade diesel quality. In many emerging markets, gasoil is the primary fuel for power generation, serving grid-connected and off-grid installations.

Gasoil applications — industrial power generation, heating systems and marine bunkering operations

Gasoil vs automotive diesel — key differences

Buyers sometimes ask how gasoil differs from automotive diesel (e.g. EN 590). The main distinctions are:

Export markets and delivery terms

Alghaf Marine DMCC exports gasoil to buyers in the Middle East, Turkey, North and West Africa, South and East Asia. Key demand drivers include power generation needs, seasonal heating demand, marine bunkering and industrial growth.

In the Middle East, gasoil is consumed by power utilities, desalination plants and construction projects. CIF delivery to Gulf and Red Sea ports provides turnkey supply management. FOB Black Sea offers attractive pricing for regional traders with their own freight capacity.

In Africa, gasoil powers diesel generators that form a critical part of the electricity supply in many countries. Demand is seasonal (peak during dry season when hydro generation drops) and structural (ongoing electrification). We supply to West African ports (Lagos, Tema, Dakar) and East African terminals on CIF terms.

For Turkey, gasoil serves heating, industrial and marine bunkering needs. FOB Black Sea loading provides short sea distances and competitive delivered cost for Turkish importers, while CIF terms are available for end-users.

FOB — delivery at Black Sea loading port. Buyer nominates vessel and bears freight cost and risk from loading. CIF — we arrange freight and insurance to your destination port. All terms, laytime and documentation are agreed per contract.

Frequently asked questions

What is gasoil and how does it differ from diesel?

Gasoil is a middle distillate petroleum product used for heating, power generation, marine and off-road applications. While chemically similar to automotive diesel, gasoil has broader sulfur tolerances and may not meet road-fuel specifications (e.g. EN 590). It is typically lower in cost and is intended for non-road or industrial use.

What sulfur grades of gasoil do you supply?

We supply gasoil in three sulfur tiers: 0.1% (1 000 ppm) for marine gasoil and emission control zones, 0.5% for general industrial and heating use, and 1.0% for applications where higher sulfur is acceptable. The grade depends on buyer requirements and end-use regulations.

What is gasoil used for?

Gasoil has broad applications: residential and commercial heating, industrial process heat and boiler fuel, power generation in diesel generators, marine diesel oil (MDO) for ships, agricultural and construction equipment, and as a base for blending operations.

Can gasoil be used as marine fuel?

Yes. Marine gasoil (MGO) with 0.1% sulfur is compliant with IMO ECA (emission control area) requirements. It is used in auxiliary engines, boilers, and as main engine fuel in coastal and port operations where low sulfur is mandated.

How do I request a gasoil quote?

Send your inquiry with sulfur grade, volume (MT), delivery basis (FOB Black Sea or CIF and destination port), and preferred loading/delivery window to Telegram @AlghafMarine_bot or email info@alghafmarine.com.
